The world is changing, and with the Covid-19 outbreak disrupting jobs all over the world, first impressions matter now more than ever. Our top tips and picks will be sure to set you apart from the competition and leave you fresh in your future employer’s mind!
Everyone has heard the phrase “Dress for Success”, but in order to do this you need the tools to do so. It can be confusing, trying to find the clothes to guarantee you a win. Nowadays the rules are a little more relaxed – in some jobs it actually helps to have a little bit of flair, but in others it’s best to play it safe. Here are a couple of tips to get you well on your way to your dream job.
ALWAYS HAVE YOUR STAPLE ITEMS
It goes without saying that your wardrobe should have it’s staples – a well-fitting suit, preferably in versatile colours like dark grey or navy, a crisp white shirt, a silk tie. Once you have the basics, you can begin to incorporate a little more of your own style and personality using a tie clip, pocket handkerchief and a dark coloured Oxford shoe.
The great thing about staple items is that they will last a long time, and you can wear them to a whole host of different events. Invest in yourself and it will pay off, trust us.
DRESS FOR THE CAREER YOU WANT
If you’re applying for a job in finance or the government sector, it’s best to keep it smart and simple. A suit and tie paired with a dark coloured Oxford shoe is a safe option. Make sure everything is ironed and fresh, and if you’re driving make sure you hang your suit up to minimise creasing. Running a lint-roller over your suit will also make a huge difference. You want to look like you prepared for the job, and that you want it more than anyone else.
If a more creative-based career is what you’re after, the lines are a little more blurry. However, our advice is to still stick with something that is tried and tested, and works every time. Keep it simple with neutral colours, and add a pop of pattern or colour in your tie if you want. Alternatively, you could also go more casual with a t-shirt under a slim fitting suit. Dress as you mean to dress if you worked for the company, but keep it professional and tasteful. You want the interviewer to take one look at you and picture you doing the job.
Not sure what type of thing the company would wear? Try to scope it out. See if you can find out what everyone else is wearing, and stick to the smartest version of that you can find.
ACCESSORISE ACCORDINGLY – THIS INCLUDES YOUR FACE!
Okay, so you’ve got your suit, your tie and your polished shoes picked out and ready. You’re absolutely going to ace this interview. Now comes the question: do you accessorise? What do you add? How much?
The answer here obviously depends on what type of job you are going for, but we recommend not going overboard on the accessories. You are selling yourself and your ability to do the job, so there’s no need to look too flashy. We think it’s better to keep a sleek, sophisticated look that can be softened with a textured fabric or by simply opting not to wear a tie. Make sure whatever you decide to wear is tailored to you – a well-fitting suit is the optimum way to look professional.
And don’t forget to tame your scruff! Beards are very popular right now, but only if they are groomed and shaped for your face type. A simple Google search can help you find out the best way to trim your beard effectively. If you prefer the clean-shaven look, you may not have this to worry about, but make sure your hair is styled to make you look sharp.
